Puppies or Kids????

So many times I hear people say I thought about having a kid so I got a puppy to test my patience lol While this is a similar situation I’ll be the first to burst your bubble and say….puppies are so much different! Well, in a sense. They will both make you loose it when they have shredded the entire LAST roll of toilet paper and you are waddling with your pants around your ankles, piecing together enough to wipe with! You can feed the puppy a cup of uncooked broth prepared food and they are perfectly content. The baby requires much more preparation and meal time doesn’t end when you pour the cup of food in the dish. In fact it seamlessly transitions to bath time and bedtime all in one because after eating, you and baby will be covered in food, milk, spit up and no telling what else (depending on age) and you’ll want to dive straight into the closest hot soapy water to get clean and the bed will never look so welcoming at the end of the day! Except don’t get too comfy because unlike those crated puppies, the baby does.NOT.sleep! Some get pretty fortunate but for the most part you’ll be lucky to get in 2 hours at a time! So, when weighing it out…don’t use the puppy trial to make the decision. Look at the actually differences and THEN make your decision.

Now, if you’re getting a new puppy…congratulations! It’s a huge step and as a puppy owner I want to share some tips and tricks that have come in handy!

1.) Having the kids first so they can help clean up the messes lol Getting some doggie bags help them to stay germ free but still be able to help.

2.) This poopie scooper is so handy! To help keep the yard land-mine free! we find that they tend to go near the same spot each time it needs to be scooped or you will have a smelly yard. With time of course it would just add nutrients to the yard like compost but in the mean time it could be more if a mess. We opt for clean up! 🙂

3.) Probably the most important is the food choice! We have had a lot of trial and error but I found PawTree through my best friend and it has literally been a lifesaver! Its 100% guaranteed or your money back for 90 days! No more runny piles and no more gas! I don’t have to worry about lifting the heavy bags at the store (or forgetting to get it altogether) cause they ship it straight to my house as often as I choose! PLUS it’s so good for them! They even have seasonings that you can add to switch up their food. Just like us they like having a little something different every now and then. 😉 Our vet was pleasantly surprised when she read the ingredients! Use code BETTYANN to get 20% off your first purchase sitewide!

4.) A Crate! I know it’s debatable and some don’t like it but it really is the easiest way to train them and our puppies love their crates now and go in them without being told. Im not an expert but we feel like dogs ”in nature” are use to a den and as long as you creat the safe space feel in the crate they actually find it comforting. We never crate them as punishment and keep the crate as a safe place to bed. At night, after their last potty trip outside they go straight to the crate and we give a treat. They lay down and get all comfy and we don’t hear a peep till morning. Maybe I’ll do a more in depth post on how we got to this point later on.

5 tips for Mini Vacations with Kids

If you are here you are probably considering a quick getaway. And since the title is “mini” you probably don’t have a lot of spare time or cash to do it so I’m here to help! Many times I have found myself needing a getaway so bad that we spontaneously book a room, pack a bag, go on vacation and get back within a week! I’m not joking! I’m the queen of mini vacations because we don’t have tons of extra money for them, and hubby can’t take off work but with depression sometimes its literally the only thing that snaps me out of a spiral decline.

You’ll need to plan ahead. I know I said we conquered in a week but that’s a lot of trial and error and believe me with a little planning your time will be much more enjoyable.
So first thing, go somewhere you know. Don’t try to take off across the country or even to a big place like Disney because you’re going to get overwhelmed trying to cram everything in. We often go to the closest beach(which is still 5 hours away), Pigeon Forge, TN (3 hours) or if we have at least 4 days we will go to a place in Florida(9 hours) that we have been before and don’t have to spend the first 2 days figuring it out. Sounds crazy but you’d be surprised at what one day at the beach can do for your mental health which rolls over to physical!

2. keep a list of your favorites! Its ok if you haven’t up to now, its not a deal breaker but it does help! “Tried and true” places to stay, eat, do etc. this makes your time well spent because you KNOW you are going to enjoy it! Leave the “trying new places” to longer trips. It’s tempting but trust me…stick with what you know on the minis! It makes it quick to book hotels because they can often just pull up prior reservations and usually give a discount for being a returning guest! win-win!!

3. Season Passes! If you have a place close by that you can mini-vacation to and a place with season passes get them! We did this at Dollywood. We purchased the passes before the previous year was up so it allowed interest free payment plans and now we can take an overnight trip and have the days already planned. All we have to pay for is food, gas and hotel.

4. Probably my best tip for you is to keep the trip necessities together year round! Get a tote like this one so you can easily see the contents and put your essentials for each ”type” of trip. We usually get a place with a pool and we always seek the sun so my bag stays packed with sunscreen, kids’ goggles, pool dive toys, a waterproof pouch (for phone, room key and any change or money (because there is an arcade that traps us every time)), a mini first aide kit, beach hats, and their small ring floats. These first aide kits are in a bundle where you can get one for each travel bag and they are super handy AND cheap! (Mom tip-glovebox in the car is a good place for one too!) Anyways, back to the list, I also have one for “anywhere travel”. That one has things like nail clippers, extra phone charger, battery pack, Tylenol, ibuprofen, q-tips, kid Motrin, hair bows, lotion, a small bottle of shampoo/conditioner/body wash(I keep leftover hotel samples here) etc. things we always get there and need but use to forget! Also, its mostly things that we have at the house but makes it so easy to grab and go!
my beach essentials bag includes shell bags this set incLudes both shell bags and larger ones which I use for taking sand toys because the sand mostly shakes out and stays behind lol these shell dippers are super nifty!

5. Last but most certainly not least…GO! Take a big breath and tale the plunge! Out of all the trips we’ve taken both long and short, I’ve never looked back and regretted one single one! If anything, I see times we should’ve took advantage of and went MORE! The strength you gain whole away and the memories made with the family are absolutely priceless! So if you are contemplating whether a short time away will be worth it….I’m here to tell you…YES! It Is!!!! Go, relax, have fun and focus all of your energy and time into making wonderful memories!

The reason

We do everything for a reason. every choice we make is for a specific reason. We either think it’s the right thing to do, it makes us happy or sometimes just because we want to but regardless of what it is…there is always a reason. Let me tell you my reason.

So, my name is actually Rachael but Rae and Rach have always been kinda nicknames. I wanted to center the blog around our ever-changing life and so my name followed by “days” would only make sense right? But then I also wanted to make sure and include the struggle each day is for me. With mental health most of my days are spent in a bit of a “daze.” So, my brain squashed the two together and Rae’s Daze was born! My blog will be all about our days but from my point of view and with tips and tricks that I have picked up over the years to be able to get through as “normal” as possible. Many people around me would probably deny there being anything wrong with me at all and in fact, I love that! I don’t want to be a victim of mental health I want to be a warrior! Not the guns a blazing, Viking with horns and metal armor warriors 🙂 but just the one who doesn’t give up! One that does the behind the scenes battles but makes a huge impact on scene! I just want to show others that it’s ok to struggle as long as you keep moving! Maybe at the speed of a slug or maybe you are flying at the speed of an airplane but as long as you are moving forward you are being successful! Whatever the reason is for your next move, just make the move! Whether it’s going to the fridge cause you are hungry, going to work because you need money or going to the job interview because you want a new job…I don’t know what you need to do next but do something! I always joke that since I’m a stay at home mom and homeschool our kids I don’t get a break but truth is that is just my most obvious “reason.” If it weren’t the kids or being home I would need a different one because even sick days don’t give us the ticket to give up. Even being down and out (because believe me I have those more often than not), doesn’t give us a right to give up! We have to find another reason to MOVE! Sometimes, literally moving from my bed to the living room is considered a success for the day. Sometimes we seemingly complete a month of to-dos in one day! That’s mental health for ya and we just roll with it! I don’t get sick days or vacation days from work because my “work” is 24/7. I don’t get a break because the kids don’t have turn off switches like the machines and stuff that people “work” with on a “real” job. If I’m sick, we still have to eat, do schoolwork and we OBVIOUSLY still have to live so I keep on keeping on. Truth is, I use the kids a lot as my reason but really, I AM MY BEST REASON! I need to get up for me! I need to move for me! Without “me” the kids can’t do anything. So I need to take care of me and laying around trying to give up is NOT taking care of anything! If you’re breathing, God has given you another day of life and you don’t have the right to squander it being lazy and quitting on life. Get up and move and at least show Him you want life and are thankful for it.

I want to be able to look back and see happiness and smiles in our memories so “Rae’s Daze” will always be stories about moving forward. For me, for the kids, for the husband, family, friends, and Jesus! So many reasons to keep moving forward just pick one and do it!

Boarding a Disney cruise with kids and anxiety :-)

Let’s talk cruising! I LOVE going on cruises, who doesn’t? Well besides the ones with anxiety, sea sickness, debilitating depression, a toddler and WAIT….that’s us! Yep, we had all of the above and we still had an amazing time cruising. Our first family cruise was onboard the Disney Dream. We left out of Port Canaveral, Fl and we visited the Bahamas and Castaway Cay(pronounced Key), Disney’s private island. Our best friends, Bettyann and Josh joined us so we had 4 adults and our 2 daughters ages 4 and 10 at the time. So let’s dive in…except not literally cause diving off the cruise ship is not advised 😉

So, we stayed in Cocoa Beach, Fl the night before since we live in NC and didn’t want to risk any hiccups on boarding day. I highly recommend traveling in the day before because I have heard so many horror stories of things happening and causing people to miss the ship and there are no refunds for such incidents. Everything is made so simple through Disney which alleviated my stress level by millions! They have an app that you download prior to cruising and you can fill out all your documents and load them and then schedule your arrival time to board the ship. This isn’t set in stone they just need to space everyone out so if you get there a little early like we did, chances are you will be zoomed right on through. No guarantees of course but in the event you aren’t, they have miniature replicas of the ships on display that are so finely detailed it is mesmerizing to look at and you can walk around the port and check them out. Just remember to breath! It’s absolutely stunning and I was blown away but my mind was also racing with the repetitive question of “what’s next?” I can easily say Disney has thought of everything and you just need to breath and listen! 🙂 they point and guide you seamlessly! Once your time is up you’ll get in line and make your way to a desk where they process all your physical paperwork like your passports or we just had photo copies of our birth certificates and license etc. Here you get your “key to the world” cards. These cards are like the magic bands in the resort and parks or if you e never been just think of it like the cards at hotels that unlock your door except on steroids. Lol It will have your room number and diner time printed on it, it’s your room key, your pass to get on and off the ship (and you will not be allowed on or off without it), make purchases to your room etc. it’s literally your key to the world on your cruise and each member of your party gets one. Of course the kids won’t have purchasing power unless you set it up. These lanyards are perfect to keep them on you and hands free at all times. It’s also a zipper pocket for cash when you get off the ship. Again, it’s the small things that kept my anxiety at “bay”! 😉 Once we boarded, we headed straight to the buffet. All food except room service orders and specialty dining is included on Disney! I will say, when you go to the optional sit down meals at night you will be billed for tips at the end of your cruise. The staff is exceptional and worth every penny but we just weren’t aware. It was lunchtime and the rooms aren’t typically ready until later but you will be notified thru the app as soon as it is. You can choose to have your luggage delivered to your room which is what we did and I just kept a small back pack with my medicines and necessities on me. We seen people later on that still hadn’t received their luggage and I could see that being an inconvenience. The crew members work very hard to have it to you when your room is ready however, it could take longer. Some people will keep a bag with swimming gear and sunscreen with them and take advantage of the pools and hot tubs during this time but with it being our first cruise, there was so much to look at, we didn’t have time for that! Maybe after a few times onboard. I went straight for a table to take the kids and sit and gather my thoughts while the guys went to make their plates. The kids ended up catching them and made theirs as well. All drinks are included on Disney like juice, tea, coke brand sodas, water, etc. we took yetis and reusable straws and would simply fill up when we passed a station which are very conveniently located and self serve which makes it STRESS FREE!(the cups provided are small and only paper straws)

Depression and Anxiety Take Over

So before I was a mom(at the age of 21) I was a very independent, successful, happy (most of the time) woman. I was a cheerleader in school, and graduated with honors. I had life all planned out and no room for curve balls. Isn’t it funny how we plan our whole lives without room for mistakes yet fill our suitcases for a little trip full of clothes from every season “just in case” the weather changes?! Well, my life’s “weather” changed and by change I mean a hurricane came to the mountains, flattened it to ocean level and left a blizzard….overnight! Needless to say, my “suitcase” wasn’t packed for that! It was actually a slow decline but I didn’t realize it because I had no idea what was coming! My wonderful husband and I got married in 2008 and 6 short months later found out we was going to have a baby! To top that, it was a girl! My dreams and my “plans” were on track! Then, I was put on bed rest at 36 weeks pregnant :-/ because of preterm labor and I didn’t appreciate that. I had already been laid off at my job due to company closing just a couple months prior so I had to go from working, to piddling trying to stay busy, to full blown bed rest! After 3 weeks I was induced and delivered our baby girl, Taylar Paiton. She was perfect! Literally! The doctor said she was “textbook” perfect! All was perfect except when I stood up for the first time, urine pooled at my feet! Yes, that’s right, I said it, I was 21 years old, married a little over one year, fresh out of bed rest, first time new mommy, with a prolapsed bladder!!!! However, I did not mention this to my doctor because I thought it was normal! There was a lot of “young and dumb” moments prior but this one topped it! I went home and unsuccessfully dealt with this until my first appointment a week later and my doctor was so deeply saddened and sincerely concerned knowing how hard it had been for me. I had worn teenage goodnight diapers for a week while wondering WHY NO ONE TOLD ME about that part. Now I realize it’s because that part wasn’t normal. Along with that, I cried…all.the.time! I cried because my newborn was beautiful, because she would eventually go to kindergarten, because I wanted her to sleep but didn’t want her to sleep, because she wouldn’t wear her tiny clothes for long and one day I’d have to shop in bigger sizes, and well…I cried for anything that crossed my mind good or bad. My doctor was again concerned but also aware of “baby blues” however, at my second week appointment we realized it was more than that. I was referred to a behavioral health clinic in our very small town and there I was basically a Guinea pig because all they treated was addiction and abuse so I didn’t really fit into any of their “programs.” We bounced around to a couple of these before my doctor done some research and found a women’s life cycle and post-partum specialist a couple hours from us. At this point, I was 9 months in, reoccurring fleeting thoughts of suicide and one incident where I ran my bath with scalding hot water in efforts to kill the pain. Please don’t let yourself get to that point! Reach out cause there is help! When I seen the specialist for the first time, it became very clear, I had major depressive disorder and needed help! She assured me of what I already knew but My condition had zero to do with Taylar! She was beautiful and perfect in every way. As lovely as I had dreamed her to be. But in my mind, there was a chemical imbalance that took place during the hormonal roller coaster I had got on a year prior! No one can say for sure whether it would’ve happened without the pregnancy right then or if it had been years later but having a mental illness was inevitable it just happened to introduce itself THEN! The doctor rearranged my medicines and within the week I could catch a thought and was finally able to smile again! She referred me to a urologist within the same network and 3 months later I had a mesh sling implanted for my bladder and it instantly solved that problem. I was feeling human again! Those 9 months were a living nightmare! Jesus, my newborn, my mom, step-dad and husband were the only reason I pulled through it and am where I am today, which I’ll write about in following blogs! I hope everyone that ever reads this has that support but if you don’t still reach out because there are people just like me that sincerely CARE and will go to extreme measures to help you!
